- Unprotected sexual intercourse with man or woman, including vaginal sex, anal sex and oral sex
- Sharing needles or syringes for injecting drugs
- Infected mothers may transmit HIV to the new-born babies during pregnancy, delivery or through breastfeeding
- Contaminated blood or blood products given by blood transfusions or other medical treatments
